Julie Baumer


Julie Baumer was wrongfully convicted of first degree child abuse of her infant nephew. In her first trial, the prosecution presented medical experts who testified that the child had been subject to violent shaking and impact trauma to the head. They discounted the baby's difficult birth history because he had two subsequent pediatrician visits in which he had been seen to be healthy and thriving. Baumer's defense attorney presented only one expert, who was not qualified to provide an alternative explanation of the baby's injuries. Instead, the attorney chose to use a trial strategy based on the theory that someone else had inflicted the injuries on the child. Baumer, however, was the only one to care for the child in the week
